Proper Decorum

Old South Balls does not exist as a prom alternative. Young men do not "take" young women to the balls; there are no "dates." Balls are attended primarily by families. Dancers twelve and older will receive dance cards. Younger children are welcome to dance with their father or mother.

In keeping with our purpose, we practice historical etiquette at our events.

“At private assemblies, it should be the effort of both ladies and gentlemen to render themselves as agreeable as possible to all parties…”

~Martine’s Hand-book of Etiquette, and Guide to True Politeness, 1866

But above all else, we wish to show Christ to one another and maintain gender specific roles.

Gentlemen should practice leadership, initiative, and courtesy by seeing to the needs of all ladies present, asking a variety of young ladies to dance, and being pleasant to all.

Likewise, ladies should practice patience and respect, being agreeable to all the gentlemen present. They should also be aware that being asked to dance is a privilege and not a sign of particular attachment.
